The charming first novel in a new comic crime series, from one of Britain's most-loved writers, the incomparable Lynne Truss Brighton, 1957. Inspector Steine rather enjoys his life as a policeman by the sea. No criminals, no crime, no stress. So it's really rather annoying when an ambitious – not to mention irritating – new constable shows up to work and starts investigating a series of burglaries. And it's even more annoying when, after Constable Twitten is despatched to the theatre for the night, he sits next to a vicious theatre critic who is promptly shot dead part way through the opening night of a new play. It seems Brighton may be in need of a police force after all...

Every week, tens of thousands of children across America are injected with the DPT (diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus) vaccine. The law requires it, and most children will get four DPT shots before they are two years old. But what if one of the components of the vaccine was not safe? What if it caused not only pain, swelling, screaming, and high fever, but also shock, convulsions, brain damage, and even death? And, to make matters worse, what if there were a safer alternative but parents didn't know about it? Wouldn't the government require the drug manufacturers to produce the safer vaccine to protect the lives of the children who might otherwise suffer the shot's crippling side effects? The answer is, unfortunately, no. A Shot in the Dark is a chilling account of just how dangerous the whole-cell pertussis vaccine (the "P" part of the DPT shot) has proven to be. It provides accurate research into the history of the vaccine's development and usage. It exposes the roles played by the FDA and drug companies. It tells the tragic stories of the young victims of the vaccine. This book is also a guide for rightfully concerned parents who are looking for answers to important questions. What are the warning signs to look for to tell if your child is likely to be sensitive to the vaccine? What should parents ask their doctors about the vaccine and their child's medical profile? What is being done, here and in other countries, to combat this frightening situation? What can parents do now to help? A Shot in the Dark is a responsible, eye-opening look at a potential problem that every parent of every young child living in this country must face. Armed with the facts in this important book, parents will be able to make informed decisions about their real medical options. Book jacket.

Japan, Zen, and the West

In the years after World War II, Westerners and Japanese alike elevated Zen to the quintessence of spirituality in Japan. Pursuing the sources of Zen as a Japanese ideal, Shoji Yamada uncovers the surprising role of two cultural touchstones: Eugen Herrigel’s Zen in the Art of Archery and the Ryoanji dry-landscape rock garden. Yamada shows how both became facile conduits for exporting and importing Japanese culture. First published in German in 1948 and translated into Japanese in 1956, Herrigel’s book popularized ideas of Zen both in the West and in Japan. Yamada traces the prewar history of Japanese archery, reveals how Herrigel mistakenly came to understand it as a traditional practice, and explains why the Japanese themselves embraced his interpretation as spiritual discipline. Turning to Ryoanji, Yamada argues that this epitome of Zen in fact bears little relation to Buddhism and is best understood in relation to Chinese myth. For much of its modern history, Ryoanji was a weedy, neglected plot; only after its allegorical role in a 1949 Ozu film was it popularly linked to Zen. Westerners have had a part in redefining Ryoanji, but as in the case of archery, Yamada’s interest is primarily in how the Japanese themselves have invested this cultural site with new value through a spurious association with Zen.

For Laney Pearson and the rest of the staff, this makes it easier to move past the senseless death and destruction that they see on an almost daily basis. An ingenious detective finds the fatal chord in a fugue of death! note: a short story Excerpt "Dear me, Kit, this visitor certainly is in a hurry." It was eleven P.M. the front door of Dr. Feather's apartment was ringing with steady violence. In his faded old dressing gown and carpet slippers little Dr. Feather sat expectant, while Kit, his small, dark-haired young daughter, went to the door. The visitor was Detective-sergeant Blaine, a plainclothes police detective. Dr. Feather had known him for many years. "Well, well, Sergeant. Come in. Sit down-or are you in a rush? You sounded-" "Murder case," Blaine said. "Mighty glad you haven't gone to bed, Dr. Feather. I sort of hated-" "Oh, that's all right, Sergeant. Murder-" "Right around the corner from here. So I thought, instead of phoning-" "Of course, Sergeant. You think I can be of help? That's fine. Get my shoes, Kit. Hurry, child-can't you see the sergeant is in a rush?" "Yes, Father." "An old musician got murdered," Blaine was saying. "It happened only an hour ago. Captain Mac phoned for me-looks like an inside job. If it is, we got the murderer." "Musician, Sergeant? A musician got murdered?" "Yeah. Maybe you've heard of him, an old-timer. Antoine Giorni. Never heard of him myself, but-" "Antoine Giorni! Dear me, Sergeant, why of course I've heard of him. Twenty years ago, before my girl Kit was born, he was a famous concert pianist. Good gracious, how that takes one back! Why, I can I remember then Antoine Giorni was-" "Yeah. Well, that's him. We got four suspects-two young men an' two young women. They was paired off when the shot was fired. Damn queer layout, Dr. Feather. Looks to me like one couple is innocent an' the other is lyin' its head off. But I'll be dogged if I can figure out which is which."

A SHOT IN THE DARK describes the formation and the activities of local, independent, recording companies in Nashville in the 10 years after WWII, the very heyday of reigional companies, before rock & roll and the eventual internationalization of the music business. These labels and their owners evolved from the local jukebox and amusements business and other small elements of the small business community. They often featured truly local performers; they sometimes aspired to national status; and occasionally they achieved it. The book also describes the infrastructure they worked within and the personal stories of the main label owners and their performers. Finally, it examines the part the labels played in the emergence of Nashville as Music City.

Ten of the most intriguing unsolved New Zealand murders from the Jazz age are reopened and reinvestigated, using modern techniques. A Christchurch publican shot in a crowded pub, an Indian fruiterer beaten to death in Hawera and a trail of destruction left across Waikato and the Bay of Plenty by a mass murderer - these are just some of the fascinating unsolved murders profiled in Shot in the Dark. While the ten cases profiled may sound like very modern crimes, they were all committed in the years between the First and Second World Wars. Scott Bainbridge reopens each case by examining the victims' lives, the events leading up to the crimes, the original police investigations and the conclusions reached by police at the time. He then applies modern investigative techniques to the cases sometimes coming to startling conclusions.

She could see the lights of the train and the parking lot, but where she was standing was pitch black. She took out her silver vial and unscrewed the top. She scooped out a pile of cocaine with the little spoon and snorted it up one nostril, then the other. It was an exquisite moment as the drug charged through her brain like a stampede of white lightning. Hot damn, she whispered, and gave her head a little shake as she exhaled. She felt so good. So perfect. Because of the deal she'd just pulled off . And the money she was going to make. And handsome Marc, waiting for her in the City with all of that cocaine.
