The pop world accelerated and broke through the sound barrier in 1966. In America, in London, in Amsterdam, in Paris, revolutionary ideas slow-cooking since the late '50s reached boiling point. In the worlds of pop, pop art, fashion and radical politics -- often fueled by perception-enhancing substances and literature -- the 'Sixties', as we have come to know them, hit their Modernist peak. A unique chemistry of ideas, substances, freedom of expression and dialogue across pop cultural continents created a landscape of immense and eventually shattering creativity. After 1966 nothing in the pop world would ever be the same. The 7 inch single outsold the long-player for the final time. It was the year in which the ever lasting and transient pop moment would burst forth in its most articulate, instinctive and radical way. Jon Savage's 1966 is a monument to the year that shaped the pop future of the balance of the century. Exploring canonical artists like The Beatles, The Byrds, Velvet Underground, The Who and The Kinks, 1966 also goes much deeper into the social and cultural heart of the decade through unique archival primary sources.

Combining the personal memories and critical analysis of a self-confessed pop addict with a wealth of contemporary documentary evidence, Gathered From Coincidence reconstructs a truly momentous era to tell the story of the music of the Sixties year by year.By tracing in parallel the origins and development of the recording careers of major talents on both sides of the Atlantic – the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Bob Dylan, Dusty Springfield and many more besides – this account shows how they traded creativity with one another. All the great Sixties’ hits – as well as a host of less well-known gems – are described in the context of the charts of the day, tracking the ups and downs of different trends as they came and went, such as: rock’n’roll, rhythm & blues, psychedelia, modern folk, the concept album or supergroups. But beyond this, each chapter also places the music in a broader historical and cultural setting of landmark events at home and abroad – the space race, the Profumo affair, the Cold War, Vietnam, the growth of satire – to show how, as the decade unfolded, the paths of pop and current affairs drew ever closer together. If you thought the Sixties were just about the fleeting dreams of hippies in the Summer of Love, then think again! This book will open your eyes to a far-reaching imaginative legacy and how it came to shape pop music as a dazzling art form in its own right.

The topic ·Stress and Strain· of this conference was ideally constrasted by the remoteness and quiet atmosphere of the meeting place Hotel Seehof In Ratzeburg, a small medieval town situated on a peninsula in lake "Kuchensee· east of Hamburg In northern Germany. With the participation of 53 leading experts from all over the world, the workshop covered the widest possible range from the advancement of bonding theory, new mechanistic insights into chemical transformations and physical properties of highly strained compounds to their use as building blocks In organic synthesis and even as probes Into the detection of enzyme mechanisms. Because of their specific reactivities small ring units can uniquely play their role in the construction of composite functionalities. Such functionalities can increase the elegance In natural and non-natural products syntheses, since they help to develop more convergent synthetic routes and Improve the necessary chemo-, regio-and stereo-selectivity. This book presents all of the 20 Invited lectures and is complemented with short versions of 12 contributed papers and 13 poster presentations. I am convinced that it will stimulate further rapid development of this field of organic chemistry, which recently has seen extensions into the bioorganic area as well as towards new materials. In fact, several ·supra-natural" -at first sight exotic -compounds are already available In useful quantities and are being exploited to create vastly new molecular devices, i. e. compounds with unprecedented molecular functions and polymers with unconventional properties.

In the course of history, humans have attempted to interrupt the physiological and psychological bond formed between a nursing mother and her child by substituting breastfeeding with artificial formulas. A growing body of evidence indicates that breast milk, quite apart from its unsurpassed nutritive value, contains a large number of substances that protect the offspring from common infectious agents and allergens and promote the maturation of the gastrointestinal tract and the immune system. In addition to well described milk antibodies and soluble mediators of innate immunity, milk cells and pluripotent secreted factors - cytokines - are currently in the forefront of extensive research with respect to their importance in milk immunology. The purpose of this conference was to critically evaluate the current state of our knowledge concerning the protective role of immune agents found in milk, to provide up-to-date information of milk factors with respect to their role in the maturation of immunological defense systems in the neonate, and to reassess the importance of breastfeeding in the prevention of allergies in formula-fed infants. We hope that the work presented by international participants will prompt many new ideas and stimulate further research in this important area. This conference was sponsored primarily by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. We would like to thank Drs. Sumner Yaffe and Delbert Dayton for their efforts with the organization, planning, and support of this conference.

Celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the most popular and enduring band ever: “Even the most hardcore Deadheads will be impressed by this obsessively complete look at the Grateful Dead’s lyrics” (Publishers Weekly). The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics is an authoritative text, providing standard versions of all the original songs you thought you knew forwards and backwards. These are some of the best-loved songs in the modern American songbook. They are hummed and spoken among thousands as counterculture code and recorded by musicians of all stripes for their inimitable singability and obscure accessibility. How do they do all this? To provide a context for this formidable body of work, of which his part is primary, Robert Hunter has written a foreword that goes to the heart of the matter. And the annotations on sources provide a gloss on the lyrics, which goes to the roots of Western culture as they are incorporated into them. An avid Grateful Dead concertgoer for more than two decades, David Dodd is a librarian who brings to the work a detective’s love of following a clue as far as it will take him. Including essays by Dead lyricists Robert Hunter and John Perry and Jim Carpenter’s original illustrations, whimsical elements in the lyrics are brought to light, showcasing the American legend that is present in so many songs. A gorgeous keepsake edition of the Dead’s official annotated lyrics, The Complete Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics is an absolute must-have for the fiftieth anniversary—you won’t think of this cultural icon the same way again. In fact, founding band member Bob Weir said: “This book is great. Now I’ll never have to explain myself.”

A Single Source on Parallel Synthesis for Lead Optimization The end of the previous millennium saw an explosion in the application of parallel synthesis techniques for making compounds for high-throughput screening. Over time, it became clear that more thought in the design phase of library development is necessary to generate high quality hits. More recently, the use of parallel synthesis techniques has shifted to applications beyond screening collections. Exploring the nuances of this technology, High-Throughput Lead Optimization in Drug Discovery describes the application of parallel synthesis to lead optimization and the design and synthesis of targeted libraries. Examine Case Studies that Cover a Range of Different Biological Targets Featuring real-world examples and contributions from well-known scientists, the book explores the shift to conducting parallel lead optimization in-house while outsourcing most of the screening libraries synthesis. It includes more than 15 case studies that encompass a range of biological targets for application in different therapeutic areas. The text contains examples of solid and solution-phase techniques for the synthesis of directed libraries. The chapter authors explain the design principles they used to direct the choice of templates and diversity elements. Speed Up Drug Discovery and the Hit-to-Lead Process Focusing on the application of combinatorial chemistry to medicinal chemistry, this volume compiles a series of optimization projects that give you a snapshot of successes and challenges in the use of parallel synthesis for lead optimization. It explores how this technology, when applied to library design, can speed up drug discovery.

The Cary Conferences, as we have envisaged them, are different from most scientific meetings in that they provide a forum for major issues in ecology from a more philosophical point of view. It appears to many of us that ecologists have limited opportunities to come together in small groups to address in a more philosophical way some of the major questions and issues that matter very much to the future of humankind and to us as ecologists. Moreover, we hope that the setting ofthe Mary Flagler Cary Arboretum promotes strong interaction and dis cussion between Conference participants with a minimum of distraction. We are proud to make our facilities available for such meetings, and we hope that over the years these Conferences might provide direction and leadership for the whole field of ecology. We have the broad goal of attempting to advance the field of ecology by bringing together leading ecologists and other scientists to address major issues. The first Cary Conference, in 1985, considered the status and future of ecosystem science. This first Conference was rather loosely structured but was successful in stimulating discussion, ideas, and enthusiasm (Likens et al. , 1987). The goals for this second Cary Conference in 1987 were: 1. to identify the roles of long-term studies in ecology; 2. to identify the options for study of long-term ecological phenomena; 3.
