Nick Knight is among the world's most influential and visionary image makers. As a fashion photographer, he has consistently challenged conventional notions of beauty and is renowned for his groundbreaking creative collaborations with designers including Alexander McQueen, Comme des GarÇons, and John Galliano. Advertising campaigns for clients such as Christian Dior, Yohji Yamamoto, Shiseido, Jil Sander, Swarovski, and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as award-winning editorials for W, Vogue, Dazed & Confused, Visionaire, and i-D magazines, among others, have kept Knight at the vanguard of progressive image making for the past three decades. This incredible volume—with all images selected by Knight—is a midcareer retrospective of his work, from 1990 to the present day. With an introduction by Charlotte Cotton, curator of photography at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the book includes work for major advertising campaigns for Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Levi Strauss, as well as numerous prestigious fashion publications. It features collaborative work with BjÖrk, Michael Clark, Peter Saville, Gareth Pugh, Massive Attack, and Hussein Chalayan, photographs of the natural world, exquisite editorial images for Vogue, and models who defy fashion's stereotypes. It also includes examples of Knight's ground-breaking performance and film work on his Web site, SHOWstudio.com, the first to seriously consider how contemporary fashion photography would be shaped and expanded by the Internet—and is the contemporary reference point for many of the most innovative ideas and experiences of fashion today. With more than 300 striking images reflecting Knight's extraordinary vision and fearless experimentation, this volume is a landmark in both the genres of photography and fashion.

Marxism in Asia (RLE Marxism)

Author: Colin Mackerras,Nick Knight

Marxism is a theory which originated in the context of nineteenth-century industrialised Europe. Despite its European origins, Marxism has actually found greatest significance as a doctrine for change in the context of the underdeveloped peasant societies of Asia. This paradox has only been resolved through adaptation of Marxism to suit the specific features of particular Asian societies. There has consequently been a differentiation of Marxism along national lines. In this book, first published in 1985, the theoretical and practical implications for this national differentiation of a ‘universal’ (European) theory are explored, followed by a more detailed analysis of the manner in which Marxism has developed during different historical periods in particular Asian contexts.

'Nick Knight's close reading of the debate on increased globalisation within China provides an essential analysis for anyone seeking to identify the dynamics of change in that country. In the process he not only highlights the extent to which the idea of globalisation is fashionable yet contested for China, as elsewhere, but also the paradoxes of a Communist Party State embracing a neoliberal agenda and world system.' - David S.G. Talking Fashion

In these fascinating and revealing interviews, influential figures from every aspect of the world of fashion share their stories, insights, and experiences. Journalist Jan Kedves isn't afraid to ask a pointed question, and his subjects certainly aren't afraid to answer. Whether it's Bruce Weber discussing nudity, dogs, and Clint Eastwood; Juergen Teller talking about daring shoots with Charlotte Rampling, Victoria Beckham, and the one time he may have gone too far; or Raf Simons waxing nostalgic about his days and nights as a club kid, this collection of interviews goes beyond the latest trends to distill what makes its subjects tick. A fashion-world insider in his own right, Kedves knows how to talk to models, designers, photographers, and artists, sharing his own opinions and recollections as a way of drawing out even the most reticent. As a result, his conversations with the likes of Pierre Cardin, Malcolm McLaren, Rick Owens, Helmut Lang, and Veruschka can feel as intimate as a late-night gabfest, and every bit as fun. Other interviewees include the following: Miguel Adrover, Walter Van Beirendonck, Bless, Damir Doma, Michel Gaubert, Jean-Paul Goude, Iris van Herpen, Nick Knight, Charlie Le Mindu, Willi Ninja, Diane Pernet, Loc Prigent, Viviane Sassen, Valerie Steele, Barbara Vinken, Bernhard Willhelm, Zaldy.

Yet over the past decade, the increasing use ofechnology and image manipulation within the fashion industry have led to anncrease in the fantastical image, as much a product of the machine as it ishe result of the imaginative faculties of its creators. From fashion shootshat display clothes adorned on invisible models, to painterlyeinterpretations of the traditional fashion tableaux, the fine line betweeneality and fantasy is becoming increasingly blurred. Marxist Philosophy in China : From Qu Qiubai to Mao Zedong, 1923-1945

Author: Nick Knight

ISBN: 1402038062
Category: Philosophy
Page: 246

This book recounts the history of Marxist philosophy in China between 1923 and 1945 through the writings and activities of four philosophers: Qu Qiubai, Ai Siqi, Li Da and Mao Zedong. Two of these philosophers – Qu and Mao – were also political activists and leaders, but their contribution to this history is as important, if not more so, than the contribution of Ai and Li who were predominantly philosophers and scholars. The inclusion of Qu and Mao underlines the intimate connection between philosophy and politics in the revolutionary movement in China. It is not possible to speak credibly of Marxist philosophy in China without considering the political context within which its introduction, elaboration and dissemination proceeded. Indeed, each of the philosophers considered in this book repudiated the notion that the study of philosophy was a scholastic intellectual exercise devoid of political significance. Each of these philosophers regarded himself as a revolutionary, and considered philosophy to be useful precisely because it could facilitate a comprehension of the world and so accelerate efforts to change it. By the same token, each of these philosophers took philosophy seriously; each bent his mind to the daunting task of mastering the arcane and labyrinthian philosophical system of dialectical materialism. Philosophy might well be political, they believed, but this was no excuse for philosophical dilettantism.

Li Da (18901966) was one of Chinas most important Marxist intellectuals and a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party, yet he has been little studied in the West. In this seminal work, Knight analyzes Li Das contribution to the dissemination of Marxist philosophy and theory in China and explores his philosophical relationship with Mao Zedong. Through the lens of Lis life and thought, this book provides a detailed assessment of the introduction and dissemination of Marxist philosophy and social theory in China. Li Da (18901966) was one of Chinas most important Marxist intellectuals and a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party. He played a major role in the introduction of Marxist philosophy and theory to China and in its dissemination among Chinese revolutionaries. His works are now regarded in China as classics of Marxist philosophy, and he is numbered among the ten most influential Chinese intellectuals of this century. Yet, almost nothing has been written about Li Da in English. In this seminal study, Knight analyzes Li Das contribution to the flowering of Marxist philosophy and theory in China, examining Lis writings and placing them in the context of the Marxist tradition. Knight also explores Li Das philosophical relationship with Mao Zedong, who was heavily influenced by Lis works. Through the lens of Lis life and thought, this book provides a detailed assessment of the introduction and dissemination of Marxist philosophy and social theory in China.

The Lady Gale is like many married women. She cooks, cleans, cares for her husband the Great Sir William, and does her best to stem the tide of domestic chaos that is always looming. To her homeland, the kingdom of Thistledown, she is no more than “The Knight’s Wife,” but in fact she is much, much more. For the length of their twenty year marriage, Gale has kept her husband, the legendary Sir William from being, slashed, beaten, barbecued, fried, murdered, and ingested by the various monsters that would threaten the safety of Thistledown. Sir William is nearly blind, yet the king and peasants have no clue of their hero’s handicap. Gale has done her best to keep it that way, until one freak occurrence threatens to ruin her two decades long charade. The Great Sir William is unaware that his wife is anything but the good housewife and woods woman she has let him see her as for over twenty years. Gale was raised in the woods by her father and taught how to fight and track better than most knights could ever dream of. She allows love to guide her, but sometimes love can distract as well as guide. A lesson the Lady Gale learns much to her chagrin.
